Our Kazakhstan Adoption

Hello, We are Joe and Steph - a couple with a young biological son who have made the decision to adopt a child from Kazakhstan. Joe also has a teenage daughter from a previous marriage. Rather than infertility, we are adopting "by choice". We made this decision after much thought and research. There are so many children in the world that need a loving home. We hope this blog will keep our friends/family informed of our progress along the way!

Walking!

Brogan has been walking now for about 3 weeks! He is still adjusting well. We have the Early Interventionist coming out once a week to check on him and give us some suggestions on how to help him along. She feels that his gross motor skills have caught up just fine now. So, the primary focus is going to be on his fine motor skills and speech. We are working on teaching him some baby sign language. It's been two weeks since we started with just "mealtime" signs and he can correctly sign "more" and "milk". I know he understands many things that we say to him, but the poor little guy just can't talk yet and I know that it frustrates him sometimes, so hopefully the signing will help.

He still has some night terrors, but slowly they are getting better. He is also still biting, but that seems to be improving also. We started doing a bit of "time out" for the biting and I think it is helping to get the point across to him that he cannot bite even though I know he doesn't do it to be mean or hurtful.

I'm also awaiting an Occupational Therapy evaluation that I am getting on my own just to evaluate for any sensory issues due to the biting and he is still so obsessed with chewing and putting EVERYTHING into his mouth to the extreme. We went to the beach this weekend for the day and constantly had to keep him from trying to eat seaweed and shells! He may not need any OT, but I would just like to at least get an evaluation.

It is so neat to see him becoming more affectionate with everyone - he really is a sweet little guy. Still full of tons of energy and getting into everything around the house. He is really making up for lost time when it comes to exploring his world.

I have commented on your blog before, about the night terrors. Our son still has them as well. He also has the same issue with wanting to talk but just hasn't been able to yet.

Our sons seem to have so many things in common. I would love to chat with you. If you would like to talk send me an email at
